Buenos días! Esta semana se celebra el día del libro, que en España se celebra con muchísimas actividades. Pero no vengo a recomendaros ningún libro, el post de hoy se lo dedico a dos de las bibliotecas más espectaculares que he visitado en Estados Unidos. Os venís?

Good morning! World Book Day is celebrated this week, but I am not going to share any book recommendations today, instead I am dedicating this post to the two most spectacular libraries I have visited in the United States. Are you ready?

Library of Congress:

Si hay una biblioteca imprescindible en Washington es la del Congreso, con su famosa sala de lectura redonda bajo una impresionante cúpula. Es la biblioteca más grande del mundo, y la institución federal cultural más antigua de Estados Unidos, fundada en 1800. La colección original se perdió en un fuego, pero la biblioteca compró la enorme colección de Thomas Jefferson para empezar a reconstruir la colección.

If there is one must visit library in DC, it is the Library of Congress, with its well known round reading room under a magnificent dome. It is the biggest library in the World, and the oldest federal institution in the country, founded in 1800. The original collection was burnt in a fire, but the library purchased Thomas Jefferson huge collection to start rebuilding it.

El edificio principal está conectado al Capitolio por un pasillo subterráneo y su hall y escalinatas parecen las de un palacio Europeo.

The main building is conected to the Capitol by an underground tunnel, and its hall and stairs remind of a European palace.

New York Public Library:

La segunda biblioteca más grande de Estados Unidos es la biblioteca pública de New York, guardada por dos leones de piedra a la entrada. Su sala de lectura fue la más grande del mundo cuando se construyó, y tiene una enorme zona de almacenamiento bajo Bryan Park. 

The second biggest library in USA is New York Public Library, guarded by two stone lions at thee entrance. Its reading room was the largest ever at the time it was built, and it has a big underground storage space under Bryan Park.

Como curiosidad, en ella se encuentran la colección de antiguos peluches que pertenecieeron a Christopher Robin y que inspiraron los personajes de Winnie The Pooh! La biblioteca también ha aparecido en numerosas películas, como en una dramática escena de la primera película de Sex & The City.

Did you know you can find the original old toys that belonged to Christopher Robin and inspired Winnie the Pooh stories? They live at the kids section! The library has also appeared in several movies, like that dramatic scene on the first Sex & The City movie.

Estados Unidos tiene otras maravillosas bibliotecas, como la de Boston o la de Baltimore, y también las de algunas de las universidades más prestigiosas del país, que espero enseñaros pronto!

United States has some other amazing libraries, like the ones in Boston and Baltimore, and also the ones at some important universities in the country, that I will try to show you soon!

Buenos días! Con la llegada del buen tiempo apetece hacer planes al aire libre y disfrutar de las buenas temperaturas y la naturaleza. La primavera es sin duda la época más bonita en Washington, tanto por la floración de los cerezos, alrededor de la cual se organiza un gran festival, como por el resto de espacios verdes cuajados de flores a lo largo de estos meses.

Good morning! Warmer days are here and it is time to enjoy outdoors and breathe some fresh air. Spring is, without a doubt, the most beautiful season in DC thanks to the Cherry Blossom but also to the many green spaces full of flowers during these months.

After the first months of the pandemic,  when we could finally go outside, picnics. became my star plan (and basically the only one!), and since then I have continued exploring places in the capital to eat outdoors with my partner or with friends. Today I am sharing my favorite places to enjoy a picnic in Washington DC

.

1. Constitution Gardens

Si tienes que elegir un único lugar, el National Mall es imprescindible. Puedes elegir cualquier rincón de sus muchos kilómetros con vistas a cualquier monumento, pero yo te recomiendo plantar tu mantel en a la sombra de algún sauce de los que rodean los Constitution Gardens. Tendrás la vista del lago, el obelisco. y muchísimas variedades de árboles. Lleva algunas bellotas de postre, porque las simpáticas ardillas siempre se unen al plan!

If you can only choose one place, the National Mall is a must. You can choose any spot in its many kilometers with a nice view of a monumet, but I recommend placing your blanket by one of the weeping willows surrounding Constitution Gardens. You will get a view of the lake, the Washington monument and many tree varieties. Bring some nuts for dessert, cause the friendly squirrels always join the party!

2. Washington Monument

Otro clásico del National Mall es el Washington Monument, también conocido como el obelisco o la aguja. La gran esplanada de alrededor es perfecta para un picnic, sobre todo en fechas señaladas como el festival de las cometas o el 4 de Julio, cuando además del picnic  puedes disfrutar de actuaciones, exhibiciones aereas y fuegos artificiales. Durante finales de marzo además están en flor los magnolios blancos estrellados y los cerezos.

Another classic at the National Mall is the Washington Monument, also known as the obelisc or the needle. The grounds around it are perfect for a picnic, specially in certain dates like the Kite Festival or the 4th of July, when you can also enjoy live music, military air shows and fireworks. You can also enjoy white star magnolias and cherry trees mid-end of March.

3. Smithsonian Castle

Si estás en la parte Este del Mall, un buen sitio es delante del Castillo Smithsonian y el tiovivo. Una zona muy tranquila y con un encanto especial. Si vas a mediados/finales de Marzo puedes aprovechar a visitar los jardines del castillo, repletos de magnolias rosas en flor.

If you are on the East part of the Mall, the space in front of the Smithsonian Castle and the Carousel is a nice picnic spot. Very quiet and charming. Durring mid/end March you can see the blooming pink magnolias at the Smithsonian Castle garden.

4. Mitchell Park 

Si prefieres un lugar más tranquilo y menos monumental, el Parque Mitchell es una delicia. Intenta visitarlo a principios/mediados de mayo, cuando los iris y las glicineas blancas están en flor. Hay unas mesas estupendas para comer entre las flores.

If you prefer a less monumental and more quiet place, Mitchell Park is delightful. Try to visit beginning/mid May, when the irises and the white wisterias are in bloom. There are wonderful tables to eat among the flowers.

5. Hains Point 

Y hablando de flores, si quieres hacer un picnic entre cerezos en flor, pero lejos de la multitud de Tidal Basin, ve hasta la zona de picnic de Hains Point, el extremo de la isla de East Potomac Park. Encontrarás diferentes variadades de cerezos en flor según la época, cerrando la temporada con los tardíos kwanzan, los cerezos  rosa intenso que suelen florecer a mediados de abril.

And speaking of flowers, if you want a picnic surrrounded by cheerry blossoms,  but away from Tidal Basin crowds, head to Hains Point, on the southern end of East Potomac Park island. You will find different types of cherry trees blooming at different times, closing the season with the deep pink Kwanzan cherries, that bloom mid April.

6. Theodore Roosevelt Island

La isla Roosevelt es un oasis en mitad del río Potomac, ideal para perderse en cualquier época del año. Tiene muchos rincones bonitos para disfrutar de un picnic, pero mi favorito es en la parte norte, con vistas a Georgetown para disfrutar de una puesta de sol maravillosa. Si se te ha olvidado el postre no te preocupes, encontrarás moras y frambuesas silvestres en el camino!

Roosevelt island is an oasis in the middle of the Potomac, perfect to explore any time of the year. It has many nice corners to enjoy a picnic, but my favorite is in the north part, overviewing Georgetown and enjoying a beautiful sunset. If you forget dessert you don't need to worry, there are plenty of blueberries and raspberries on the way!

 

7. Kenilworth Gardens

Estos jardines acuáticos no son de lo más famoso de Washington, pero son una auténtica maravilla. Si puedes visitarlos a mediados de julio, cuando los lotos están en flor, es una experiencia increible. Hay una zona de picnic con mesas a la entrada a lo jardines, y después puedes pasear por ellos e incluso adentrarte un poco más hacia el agua por una pasarela de madera. No te olvides de llevar protección solar y un repelente para mosquitos!

These acuatic gardens might not be the best known in DC, but they are such a wonder. Try to visit mid july, when the lotus flowers bloom, it is an amazing experience. There is a picnic area with tables at the garden entrance, and then you can walk around them or even take the boardwalk for a longer stroll. Do not forget your sunscreen and mosquito repellent!

8. Kennedy Center

Si prefieres un picnic más de ciudad, sin tanta naturaleza, el Kennedy Center es una zona muy tranquila que tiene mesas con bancos resguardadas por los sauces llorones y con muy buenas vistas. Y si no te ha dado tiempo a preparar tu cesta, en The Reach sirven bebidas, fiambres y quesos para que lo tomes en sus mesas al aire libre.

If you are more comfortable in the city, with less nature around, the Kennedy Center is a quiet place with tables under the weeping willows with a nice view. If you did not bring your basket you can head to The Reach, where they serve drinks and charcuterie to have on the picnic tables.

9. Georgetown Waterfront

El parque del Waterfront de Georgetown es otro lugar ideal para un picnic, con vistas al rio Potomac y a Arlington. Puedes llevarte la comida preparada o coger comida para llevar en los muchos restaurantes que hay por la zona.

Georgetown Waterfront park is another excellent picnic spot, with a nice panoramic of the Potomac and Arlington. You can bring your picnic basket orr just order takeout from any nearby restaurant.

10. Rock Creek

Si prefieres más naturaleza, entonces ve al parque Rock Creek y aprovecha alguna mesa de las muchas zonas de picnic. Para bajar la comida hay muchos senderos con diferentes rutas y dificultad, y con algo de suerte podrás ver a los cervatillos bebiendo agua en el arroyo.

If you prefer wild nature, head to Rock Creek park and get one of the tables at the many picnic areas. After your meal you can take different trails with several difficulty levels, and if you get lucky you might see the baby deers drinking water at by the river.
