Empiezo con un vestido que está en Mount Vernon, la casa original de George Washington, el primer presidente de Estados Unidos. Este vestido es una réplica del vestido de novia que llevó Martha Washington, Primera Dama de 1789 a 1797. Al morir su anterior marido, ella se encargo de gestionar sus negocios de comercio con Londres, y aprovechaba a pedir encajes, telas, tocados, guantes de piel de cordero y medias de seda, exigiendo siempre la mejor calidad, por lo que para su segunda boda pudo lucirse bien.

Let's start with a dress that is actually in Mount Vernon, the house that belonged to George Washington, the first President of the United States. This dress is a replica of Martha Washington's wedding dress, she was First Lady from 1789 to 1797. When her first husband died, she had to manage the family business, importing from London, so she asked for fabrics, hats, lambskin gloves and silk stockings, demanding always the best quality, so on her second wedding she had everything she needed to look amazing.

Dolley Payne Todd Madison fue Primera Dama de 1809 a 1817. En el ambiente de partidos enfrentados, ella se encargó de ser la cara sonriente y la anfitriona que suavizaba tensiones organizando eventos semanales en los que se consolidó la importancia de su figura en la Casa Blanca. Sus vestidos son ideales para recibir invitados en estas reuniones:

Dolley Payne Todd Madison was First Lady from 1809 to 1817. The partisan society was tense, so she became the smiling face and hosted weekly events where they could all mingle. She became an essential figure in the White House. Her dresses were perfect to welcome guests to her events:

Mary Todd Lincoln ocupó el puesto de 1861 a 1865, al mes de empezar estalló la Guerra Civil, y sus esfuerzos se centraron en dar una imagen de solidez, organizando un programa de entretenimiento y caridad, para que los ciudadanos confiasen en que la unión del país permanecería.

Mary Todd Lincoln took the role from 1861 to 1865. The Civil War started a month after she became First Lady, so she had to focus on giving a solid image, organising entertainment and charity actions so the people would trust that the Union will prevail. 

Julia Dent Grant no tenía ningún interés en la moda, su único objetivo era ir vestida de acuerdo a su posición de Primera Dama de 1869 a a 1877. Ella estaba casi más interesada en llegar a la Casa Blanca que su marido, e intento alargar su estancia todo lo posible. Su papel, después de años de guerra y dramas, fue hacer de anfitriona y organizar eventos para disfrutar, e intentó que su puesto se reconociese igual que el de las consortes de otros líderes extranjeros. 

Julia Dent Grant had no interest in fashion, she only cared about dressing according to her position as First Lady from 1869 to 1877. She was more excited than her husband about entering the White House, and tried to stay as long as possible. Her main goal, after years of war and drama, was organising lavish events to enjoy. She also tried to be respected and formally recognised as important as the wives of foreign leaders.

Lucy Webb Hayes fue su sucesora, de 1877 a 1881, y tampoco tenía mucho interés por la moda. Su vestuario seguía las tendencias de la época y era recatado, cubriendo siempre el cuello y los brazos, por lo que fue alabada y criticada a partes iguales:

Lucy Webb Hayes was First Lady from 1877 to 1881, and did not care much about fashion. Her style followed the trends and she liked modest clothing that covered her arms and throat. She received both praise and criticism for her restrained wardrobe:

De 1886 a 1889 y de nuevo de 1893 a 1897 Frances Folson Cleveland fue la Primera Dama. Ella se casó en la Casa Blanca muy joven, y se convirtió en el referente de estilo inmediatamente. Al terminar su papel de Primera Dama siguió involucrada en política, apoyando la Primera Guerra Mundial y adoctrinando a los niños para que estuviesen a favor desde pequeños. También hizo campaña contra el sufragio femenino, diciendo que las mujeres todavía no eran lo suficientemente inteligentes para votar. Menuda elementa!

From 1886 to 1889 and again from 1893 to 1897, Frances Folson Cleveland was the Nation's hostess. She got married at the White House really young and became a fashion icon immediately. After leaving the position she stayed involved in politics, supporting the World War and trying to indoctrinate children at school in favor of war. She also campaigned against women's suffrage saying women weren't yet intelligent enough to vote. What a piece of work! 

Caroline Scott Harrison asumió el puesto de 1889 a 1892, convirtiéndose en una mujer ejemplar que, siguiendo la política económica America First de su marido, mandó hacer su vestido de inauguración y el resto de su vestuario dentro del país.

Caroline Scott Harrison made the honours from 1889 to 1892, becoming an example of the good American woman. He followed her husband America First economy policy and had her inaugural gown and the rest of her wardrobe made in the States.

Edith Carow Roosevelt estuvo en la Casa Blanca de 1901 a 1909 y para poder seguir dedicando tiempo a su familia, dio a su puesto un carácter más profesional, delegando tareas y contratando personal que trabajaba bajo sus directrices: ocupándose de la correspondencia, la comida o la protección de sus hijos de la prensa.

Edith Carow Roosevelt was First Lady from 1901 to 1909 and, to make time for her family, she defined her duties as a real job, setting guidelines and delegating in paid experts that dealt with: menus, correspondence, staff, press...

De 1915 a 1921 Edith Bolling Wilson se instaló en la Casa Blanca. Fue una mujer bien vestida, que elegía cuidadosamente sus vestidos. Tenía predilección por los diseños sencillos, negros y traídos de París de House of Worth.

From 1915 to 1921 Edith Bolling Wilson assumed the role. She was a well dressed woman that chose carefully her gowns. She liked simple black dresses, specially if they were from House of Worth in Paris.

Grace Goodhue Coolidge hizo los honores de 1923 a 1929, era aficionada a las compras y así lo publicitaba. Aunque decía no tener un color favorito, puso de moda el rojo.

Grace Goodhue Coolidge was Fist Lady from 1923 to 1929. She loved shopping and it was well publicized. She said she had no favorite color, but she made red very popular. 

Lou Henry Hoover habitó la Casa Blanca de 1929 a 1933, pero antes de convertirse en Primera Dama ya era una de las mujeres mejor vestidas del país. Fue la primera mujer de un presidente en aparecer en Vogue. Siempre vistió prendas hechas en America y se obsesionó con promover los vestidos de algodón, hasta el punto de que le diseñasen un vestido de fiesta hecho de algodón para apoyar la industria algodonera. 

Lou Henry Hoover stayed in the White House from 1929 to 1933, but she was in the country's best dressed list before becoming First Lady. She was the first one to appear on Vogue, and she always wore dresses made in America. She made a point of wearing cotton dresses, including a specially designed evening gown, to promote the cotton textile industry.

En esta época la sociedad americana estaba cambiando y ya no había servicio en todas las casas, por lo que muchas mujeres tenían que hacer las tareas del hogar, para lo que se inventaron los "Hooverettes" una especie de vestido-delantal-bata realizado en algodón y muy barato, perfecto para trabajar en casa y no ensuciar los vestidos de salir. During these changing times, house service stopped being common in every home, so most women had to do house work and this way the "Hooverettes" were born, as a cheap cotton housedress that women could wear to do their tasks without spoiling the nice dresses they wore outside. Eleanor Roosevelt fue la Primera Dama de Estados Unidos (y, para algunos, del Mundo) de 1933 a 1945. Con todo lo que viajaba, era una mujer práctica, que prefería atuendos sencillos que poder combinar con distintos accesorios o blusas según la ocasión. Fue una mujer tremendamente implicada  en política, y por ello tenía poco tiempo libre, por lo que apostaba por la moda prêt-à-porter, y siempre se preocupó de que esta no se hiciese en talleres de explotación laboral. Es considerada una de las líderes más influyentes del s.XX, habiendo presidido la Comisión de Derechos Humanos de las Naciones Unidas y participado en la creación de la Declaración Universal de los Derechos Humanos. Este fue su vestido de inauguración, con unas mangas que se le podían añadir:

Eleanor Roosevelt was First Lady of the United States (and of the World for many people) from 1933 to 1945. She traveled a lot, so she preferred simple outfits that she could wear with different accessories. She was always very involved in politics, so ready made clothes were a good option for her, but she cautioned against clothes made in sweatshops. She is considered one on the most influential leaders of the 20th century, and pressed the country to join the United Nations and became its first delegate. She was also first chair of the UN Commission on Human Rights and oversaw the draft of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. This was her inauguration gown, which had detachable sleeves:

De 1953 a 1961 Mamie Doud Eisenhower ocupó el puesto de Primera Dama. A ella le encantaba la moda y apoyaba a los diseñadores que le gustaban, pero le hacía igual de feliz un vestido hecho a medida que comprar sombreros por catálogo o en grandes almacenes con descuentos. Las mujeres del país copiaban los looks de la señora Eisenhower y la moda de sus brazaletes de charms.

Mamie Doud Eisenhower was First Lady from 1953 to 1961. She loved fashion and patronized well known designer, but also enjoyed discounted ready-made dresses from department stores.  Women copied her style and her charm bracelets.

En 1961 llega a la Casa Blanca Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy, que revoluciona el estilo de la época con su vestuario diseñado por Oleg Cassini. Los trajes sencillos de silueta A se conocían como "Look Kennedy" y cualquier asociación con Jackie era suficiente para vender dede trajes hasta gafas, hasta el punto que los maniquí se las tiendas acabaron pareciéndose a ella. Su pasión por las Bellas Artes la llevó a renovar la Casa Blanca y reconociendo su valor histórico y la importancia de protegerla, así como el resto de casas antiguas de la plaza Lafayette. El traje diseñado por Chanel que llevaba el día que asesinaron a su marido todavía está en la memoria de muchas generaciones. Estos son dos de los diseños de Cassini:

In 1961 Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy arrived at the White House, changing the style of that time with her wardrobe, designed by Oleg Cassini. Simple A line suits were known as "the Kennedy look" and anything related to her sold fast, from copied dresses to hats or lipstick, and even the mannequins resembled the First Lady. Her passion for fine arts made her restore the White House and she focused on returning its historical character and protecting it, along with the old houses in Lafayette Square. The Chanel designed suit that she was wearing when her husband was killed has remain in the memory of many generations. This are some of Cassini designs:

Tras el asesinato de Kennedy, Lady Bird Johnson pasó de Segunda a Primera Dama, puesto que ocupó de 1963 a 1969. Su estilo recuerda al de Jackie y al de los 60, y su objetivo fue ser útil y embellecer el país. Apoyó un plan para reducir la pobreza infantil buscando casas de acogida para los niños y se centro en embellecer las carreteras y las ciudades del país, aprovechando los recursos naturales y protegiendo el medio ambiente. Su proyecto para mejorar la ciudad de Washington y su habitabilidad dieron sus frutos, pues hoy es una ciudad estupenda para vivir.

After Kennedy was killed, Lady Bird Johnson, who was Second Lady, became First, and kept her position from 1963 to 1969. Her style was very Jackie, and very 60´s, she wanted to be useful and made beautification of the country her main goal.

Betty Bloomer Ford no tuvo vestido de inauguración, pues asumió el puesto al renunciar Nixon. Fue Primera Dama de 1974 a 1977 y, aunque centro sus esfuerzos en defender la igualdad de derechos, se la recuerda por su reacción al ser diagnosticada de cáncer de mama. Gracias a ella se empezó hablar abiertamente de ello y la sociedad empezó a concienciarse de la enfermedad. El vestido verde manzana lo donó ella a la fundación Smithsonian para estar representada en esta colección:

Betty Bloomer Ford did not have an inauguration since she assumed the role when Nixon resigned, but she chose the green dress to represent her at the Smithsonian collection,   She was First Lady from 1974 to 1977, she campaigned for Equal Rights, but is remembered for her reaction when she was diagnosed with breast cancer. Her open discussion of the illness raised public awareness of the disease.

Rosalynn Smith Carter fue Primera Dama de 1977 a 1981 y elegíos para su inauguración el vestido azul anterior, que había utilizado previamente cuando su marido fue elegido gobernador de Georgia. Rosalynn centró sus esfuerzos en defender políticas sociales y se preocupó especialmente por los asuntos relacionados con la salud mental. Siempre estuvo muy involucrada en política.

Rosalynn Smith Carter became First Lady in 1977 and wore the previous blue dress to her inauguration. She had already worn the outfit when her husband became Governor of Georgia. Rosalynn focused on social policy issues and specially on mental health. She was always very involved in politics.

De 1981 a 1989 la Casa Blanca tuvo de anfitriona a Nancy Davis Reagan, que devolvió algo de glamour hollywoodiense con su vestuario de diseño y puso de moda el "rojo Reagan". Nancy hacía etiquetar cada traje con los datos de la ocasión en la que lo había puesto para organizarse mejor en sus apariciones públicas. Su principal objetivo fue la lucha contra las drogas y animar al presidente a construir una relación pacífica con la Unión Soviética.

Nancy Davis Reagan was First Lady from 1981 to 1989, who brought back Hollywood glamour with her designer wardrobe and popularised "Reagan red". Nancy had her clothes tagged with the events where she wore them to organise her public appearances easily. The anti drug campaign was her signature project and she also encourage the president to build a pacific relationship with the Soviet Union.

La siguiente Primera Dama fue Barbara Pierse Bush, de 1989 a 1993. Ella se centró en la alfabetización de los americanos y en animar a las familias durante la Guerra del Golfo.

Barbara Pierce Bush followed her, from 1989 to 1993. She supported literacy projects and encouraged military audiences and their families during the Gulf War.

De 1993 a 2001 el puesto lo ocupó Hillary Rodhan Clinton, encargándose de mejorar las políticas nacionales. Se preocupó por los niños y las familias y su principal meta fue la reforma de la sanidad. Tomó protagonismo mundial al hablar de la mujer en la Conferencia Mundial de Beijing, fue Senadora de Nueva York y la primera mujer candidata a la presidencia del país. 

Hillary Rodhan Clinton was stayed in the White House from 1993 to 2001and worked on domestic policy issues, specially related to family and children and the Health Care reform. She became an international figure speaking about Women issues at Beijing World Conference and is the first woman who run for political office.

Laura Welch Bush desempeñó el mismo papel que su suegra Barbara, de 2001 a 2009. Ella también se interesó por la alfabetización, los niños, las mujeres y los derechos humanos. Fue la primera mujer de un presidente en dirigirse a la nación por radio, a través de mensajes semanales. Su estilo era sencillo y a la gente le gustaba bastante puesto que trasmitía cercanía y los demás sentían que era una señora que podría ser amiga de sus madres.

Laura Welch Bush had the same role that her Mother in law Barbara form 2001 to 2009. She also focused on literacy, children, women and human rights. After 9/11 she spoke about women's rights in the first presidential weekly radio address given by a first lady. Her style was simple and elegant, the country liked her because they had the feeling she could be a friend of their mothers.

Michelle Robinson Obama fue Primera Dama de 2009 a 2017. Desde el momento en que su marido se convirtió en el primer presidente de origen afro-americano, Michelle se convirtió en un icono de estilo, que con sus elecciones de vestuario catapultó a muchos diseñadores a la fama mundial. Incluso hoy, 3 años después de abandonar la Casa Blanca, la gente sigue pendiente de lo que lleva en cada aparición pública. Sus planes durante los 4 primeros años en Washington se centraron en la familia y los niños, especialmente en luchar contra la obesidad infantil y en promover la educación mas allá del instituto. Durante los siguientes 4 años les dio especialmente protagonismo a la educación de las niñas en todo el Mundo. Este fue su vestido de inauguración:

Michelle Robinson Obama was First Lady from 2009 to 2017. Since her husband became the first Afro-American president, she became a fashion icon. With her wardrobe choices she helped young designer to become internationally known and even today, 3 years after she left the White House, people follows her style choices for every public appearance. Her main goals during the first 4 years were to fight childhood obesity and promote education after high school. The next 4 years she focused on girls education all over the World. This was her inauguration gown, designed by Jason Wu:

En 2017 llegó a la Casa Blanca Melania Knavs Trump, la primera extranjera en llegar a este puesto. Su atención se ha centrado en el bienestar de los jóvenes, lanzando una campaña de concienciación contra el cyberbullying y las drogas. La ex modelo siempre se ha interesado por la moda, y su estilo se ha llegado a comparar con el de Jackie Kennedy y Nancy Reagan por su preferencia por los diseñadores y los trajes entallados a medida.

In 2017 Melania Knavs Trump became the first naturalized-citizen to be First Lady. She has focused on the young's well being, and has campaigned against cyberbullying and drugs. The ex model has always shown interest in fashion and she has been compared to Jackie Kennedy and Nancy Reagan for her preference for tailored pieces and high end designers.
