En
Semana Santa pasé unos días en Marruecos con mi amiga María. Fuimos en
Ferry desde Algeciras (gran error!) y nos quedamos en Tánger, desde
donde hicimos un par de excursiones a otras localidades (Coming soon!)
During
Easter I went to Morocco with my friend María. We travelled by Ferry
from Algeciras (Big mistake!) and stayed in Tangier. From there we made a
couple of short trips to different towns (Coming soon!)
Si viajas desde España a Marruecos en ferry hay que hacerlo desde Tarifa; el viaje es más corto y te dejan en el puerto de Tánger, mientras que si viajas desde Algeciras te dejan en Tánger Med, a 40 kilómetros de la ciudad (15-20€ de taxi). Si aun así prefieres salir desde Algeciras, no viajes con Acciona Trasmediterránea (2 horas de retraso a la ida y 5 a la vuelta).
If you travel from Spain to Morocco by ferry, do it from Tarifa; it's faster and they drop you at Tanger port. If you travel from Algeciras they drop you at Tanger Med, 40km away from the city (15-20€ by taxi). If you really need to travel from Algeciras, don't book it with Acciona Trasmediterránea (2 hours delay while going and 5 while returning).
DÍA/DAY 1
PLAYA: Nuestra mañana de playa quedó reducida a una hora, pero fue más que suficiente. Los locales te siguen por la arena y si te paras se acercan como moscas a la miel. Nos tumbamos un rato, pero nada de bikinis.
BEACH: Our morning at the beach was cut down to one hour only, but it was enough anyways. The locals follow you on the sand, and if you stop they stand and stare. We laid down on the sand for a while, but bikinis were automatically discarded.
COMIDA: Shawarma rápido en Mix Max (3€), junto a la Place de France.
LUNCH: Fast shawarma at MIX Max (3€), by the Place de France.
ZOCO GRANDE: Es una plaza muy amplia y con actividad. Desde ella se accede a la medina, la calle de la Kasbah, los jardines de Mendoubia y la Iglesia de San Andrés. Los jueves las mujeres bereberes inhundan los alrededores vendiendo fruta, verdura y el tradicional queso de cabra.
BIG ZOCO: It's a wide opened square with a lot of hustle. From here you can access the Kasbah Street, Mendoubia gardens and St. Andrew's church. On thursdays dozens of Berber women sell groceries and traditional goat cheese all over the place.
LA MEDINA: es todo el casco antiguo de la ciudad, amurallada. Hay un sinfín de callejones dónde perderse, comprar souvenirs (los tenderos no agobian ni te acosan con el regateo), probar panes y tomar té a la menta. En la terraza del Café Central (con wifi) se toma buen té mientras observas el ajetreo del Zoco Chico. A la mezquita sólo te dejan entrar si eres musulmán.
THE MEDINA: is the old part of the city, fortified. There's a never ending mess of narrow streets where you can wander, buy souvenirs (shopkeepers are not too pushy and bargaining is not very stressful), taste typical bread and have mint tea. You can have a nice tea at Cafe Central (with wifi) while you observe the Little Zoco activity. Access to the mosque is restricted, muslims only.
LA KASBA: Si subes a la Kasbah rodeando la medina (mucho mas directo), puedes ver parte del mercadillo bereber, trozos de la muralla y las mercerías locales (que os enseñaré otro día). Una vez en la Kasbah, hay varios palacios restaurados que se pueden visitar y restaurantes muy monos en las azoteas con vistas panorámicas. Desde la placita de la Kasbah se puede salir al otro lado de la muralla y ver el mar (y las obras del puerto)
KASBAH: If you go up to the Kasbah surrounding the Medina (much easier), you can see the Berber stalls, parts of the city wall and the local haberdasheries (which I'll show you soon). Once at the Kasbah there are several restored palaces you can visit, as well as cute rooftop restaurants with a good panoramic. From the Kasbah square you can go out to the other side of the wall and see the sea and the port construction.
CENA: En Le Nabab cenamos de maravilla. Es un restaurante escondido en la Medina, un poco de postureo pero ideal para probar los platos más típicos de la cocina local. Pulcritud absoluta, servicio muy atento y unos crépes con agua de azahar con los que todavía sueño!
DINNER: Wonderful at Le Nabab. It's a fancy restaurant hidden in the Medina, a little posh but perfect to try the local cuisine. Neat and with a very caring service, I'm still dreaming of those orange crepés!
DÍA/DAY 2
DESAYUNO: 2º intento fallido de desayunar en Le Salon Bleu, por lo visto no abren hasta las 12! Acabamos en un palacio restaurado junto a la plaza de la Kasbah. La terraza acristalada era demasiado aséptica para mi gusto, la salvan el techo y las estupendas vistas. Después de tomar un té con los dulces típicos (tan dulces como el arrope) el orgulloso dueño nos enseñó las estancias del palacio, mucho más auténticas y coloridas. Tienen fotos de Mick Jagger y otras celebrities que han pasado por allí, donde también se rodó parte de "El Tiempo entre Costuras"
BREAKFAST: We tried to have breakfast at Le Salon Bleu and failed, twice! Apparently they open after 12am. So we ended up at a restored palace by the Kasbah square. The glazed salon upstairs was too aseptic in my opinion, but the nice ceiling and the view was totally worth it. After having tea with the typical sweets (way too sweet) the proud owner showed us the palace rooms, much more authentic and colorful. Mick Jagger and some more celebrities were there in the past.
HAMMAM: Las últimas horas las pasamos en un Hammam local. Muy recomendable, pero a esto le dedicaré un post a parte! Por 6€ te dejan como nueva y encima te ríes!
HAMMAM: We spent our last hours at a local Hammam. Highly recommended, but I will tell you all about it in a different post! You exit absolutely refreshed and with a big smile for 6€!
