Kimono Show, Cherry Blossom Festival DC

Buenos días! El año pasado os enseñé los cerezos en flor y lo bonita que está Washington durante los días que dura el festival. Este año, además de pasear bajo los cerezos, asistí a varios eventos culturales, y hoy quiero compartir el evento dedicado al Kimono que tuvo lugar en la Galería Freer del Smithsonian. Hace años ya os conté algo sobre esta prenda y la cultura japonesa, y esta vez he tenido la ocasión de aprender algo más, gracias a todas las japonesas expertas que vinieron a Washington para compartir su sabiduría. Todo con mucha calma y mucha ceremonia.

Good morning! Last year I showed you the cherry blossoms and how beautiful Washington looks during those days. This year, apart from walking by the cherry trees, I attended several cultural events, and today I want to share the Kimono show that took place at the Smithsonian Freer Gallery. Years ago I told you something about this garment and culture, and this time, thanks to all the Japanese ladies that came from their country, I had the chance to learn a little more. Everything with a lot of harmony and serenity.

Empezamos con un desfile de kimonos con estampados modernos, todo amenizado por música en directo gracias a estudiantes del conservatorio de Tokio.

We start with a kimono show with modern prints, all with lovely live music playing thanks to music students from Tokio.

A continuación la artista que ha realizado los kimonos para las Princesas Cherry Blossom de este año nos explicó cómo había teñido la tela con ramas de cerezos en Japón y luego había pintado a mano cada obi con la flor típica del estado de cada representante.

Next we had the artist who created the Kimonos for the Cherry Blossom Princesses of the year, explaining how she dyed the fabric with cherry tree branches in Japan and then she hand painted every obi with the typical flower of each American State.

Seguimos con otro desfile, esta vez con diseños más modernos de vestido inspirados en el kimono.

Next comes another fashion show, this time with modern dresses inspired by kimono.

Una de las características en las que hicieron especial hincapié es en la sostenibilidad de esta prenda, como dura y puede pasar de generación en generación, deshaciéndose y volviéndose a coser si fuese necesario adaptarla a otra talla o teñirla de otro color. Otras ventajas? No necesitas llevar bolso, puedes guardar tus cosas en los mil dobleces de tela, y te mantiene la espalda siempre derecha!

Everybody who talked about kimono made very clear the importance of sustainability, how it can last and we born by many generations. They unstitch it and remake it when it needs to be dyed in a different color or we worn by a different body shape. Some other pros? You don´t need to carry a bag, you can keep all your belongings inside the pleats and folds of fabric, and it keeps you back always straight!

El kimono se vende como una tira larga de tela, de la que se sacan los diferentes paneles para formar la prenda final, normalmente aprovechando en mangas y bajos los detalles del estampado. Cuando se quiere teñir o adaptar a otro cuerpo se descosen los paneles y se vuelve a realizar.

Kimono is sold as a long piece of fabric that gets cut into panels and then stitched into the final garment, usually placing the printed details on sleeves and hemlines. When they need to dye it or adapt it for somebody else they simply put the panels apart and rebuild it accordingly.

Por la cantidad de piezas que se utilizan para vestirlo correctamente las japonesas generalmente acuden a vestidoras profesionales cuando tienen eventos especiales, puesto que vestirse sola es complicado. Vestir un kimono es un arte que se enseña, y hay expertas que lo hacen sin ayuda y con total precisión, no os perdáis el video:

Because of the many pieces used to wear it, in Japan they usually go to professional dressers when they have to wear kimono for a special occasion, since getting dress without help is really complicated. Wearing a kimono is an art taught by masters, and the experts do it without help and with amazing care. Don't miss the video:

Algunas maestras de Kimono nos contaron la importancia de esta tradición, y cómo la mantienen viva, enseñando a sus alumnas con auténtica dedicación.

The kimono teachers told us about the importance of keeping tradition and culture alive, and how they pass those values to their kimono students.

Las ganadoras mundiales de Kimono también asistieron para hacer una demostración. De izquierda a derecha podéis ver a la campeona no-japonesa, la ganadora infantil, la ganadora mundial y las tres ganadoras de la categoría de kimono sincronizado.

The Kimono World Champions also attended to perform this art. From left to right you can see the Winner of the non-Japanese category, the junior winner, the World winner and the synchronized winners.

Cada una prepara su mise en place y hacen auténtica papiroflexia con el obi para rematar su kimono de la forma más original.

Each of them gets everything ready and arrange their obis in an origami-style way to get unique shapes.

Sus maestras también asistieron, orgullosas de sus logros, y nos explicaron como el kimono se va adaptando según las edades. Al cumplir años se utilizan colores pastel y las mangas más cortas, y también un kimono más formal que suele ser en un color liso y con diseños japoneses en la parte de abajo.

Their teachers also attended and explained how they adapt kimonos according to their ages. When they get older they tend to wear pastel colors and shorter sleeves, and they also use a formal kimono in a plain color with some Japanese print at the bottom.
