Good morning! Today I'm dedicating this entry to the Louis Vuitton Alma bag (I know, one more time!), a bag you might be familiar with, specially if you have been following me lately on Instagram or here. I got many messages asking all kind of things related to this bag, so, since you all are so curious about it I am going to tell you a little bit about its origin, my thoughts before buying it, where I bought it and how much I paid, how I restored it, the wear and tear after one year and my personal review, and finally, I'm sharing different outfit inspirations for every season of the year. Make yourself comfortable and grab a cup of coffee or a glass of wine, cause this will take some time.

Os cuento algo de la historia de este bolso: Se rumorea que su origen se remonta a 1925, cuando la mismísima Gabrielle Chanel encargó a Louis Vuitton una bolsa de viaje más pequeña para llevar su equipaje de mano. Algo similar a lo que pasó con el modelo Speedy, que fue una versión de mano del Keepall encargada a la Maison por Audrey Hepburn. El encargo de Coco Chanel derivó en una bolsa trapezoidal con 2 compartimentos, para la ropa sucia y la limpia, que se abría con una cremallera doble para acceder bien al interior. Años después Gaston-Louis Vuitton refinó el diseño y empezó a producir este modelo para el resto de clientes y lo bautizó bolso Squire allá por el 1934. El bolso fue rebautizado en 1955 como Champs-Élysées. Finalmente, en 1992, fue relanzado con el nombre Alma, en homenaje al puente del Alma, el diseño que hoy conocemos y el estampado monogram. Un bolso Louis Vuitton que tiene una historia de unos 100 años y que sigue siendo un icono de la casa francesa, amado por muchas mujeres a lo largo de los años y visto de la mano de caras conocidas tan diversas como Jackie Kennedy, Rihanna, Paris Hilton, Blake Lively, Kirsten Dunst o Kim Kardashian.

Let's start with the history behind the bag: Rumor has it that its origin goes all the way back to 1925, when Gabrielle Chanel ordered a custom made small travel bag from Louis Vuitton, to carry as hand luggage. Something very similar to the story behind the Louis Vuitton Speedy, which was a special order designed for Audrey Hepburn, who asked for a smaller Keepall. Coco Chanel request gave birth to a trapezoidal shape bag with 2 compartments for clean and used linens, and a double zipper for easy access to the inside. Years later, Gaston-Louis Vuitton refined the design and started manufacturing it for the rest of his clients, around 1934, under the name Squire. The bag was renamed Champs-Élysées in 1955. Much later, in 1992 it was reborned like the bag we know today, named Alma as a tribute to the Alma bridge in Paris. This Louis Vuitton bag has a history of around 100 years and it is a true icon from the French maison, loved by many women throughout the years, we have seen it in the hands of very different known faces, such as Jackie Kennedy, Rihanna, Paris Hilton, Blake Lively, Kirsten Dunst or Kim Kardashian.

El bolso en sí me encantaba, pero yo no soy muy de logos, y esto me echaba para atrás bastante. Sé que Louis Vuitton hace el modelo Alma, igual que casi todos sus modelos, en varios estampados y en piel lisa, pero a mí me gustaba con el clásico estampado monogram. Pensaréis que no suena muy coherente, que si no me van los logos cómo es que me gustaba el bolso con este estampado, pero así soy yo! A principio de los años 2000 ya tuve un pochette blanco, con el mismo estampado multicolor, y un bolso Speedy en denim también con el estampado monogram, pero en aquellos tiempos era lo que se llevaba. Todo empezó de nuevo con el bolso Noe, que es un bolso cubo del que me encapriché hace unos años, lo veía como un bolso para llevar con looks más casual y ahí el estampado con el logo no me molestaba tanto. Estuve detrás de ese bolso mucho tiempo, pero todas las piezas vintage que encontré estaban en muy mal estado (podéis ver más detalles aquí), así que acabé decidiendo olvidarme de él, puesto que sabía que, aunque encontrase uno en mejor estado, su final ya estaba sentenciado.

I loved the bag, but I'm not really into logos, so that made me think about it a lot. And I know Louis Vuitton offers this bag, like most models, in different prints and solids, but the one I liked was the monogram canvas. You might think that doesn't make any sense, but it is what it is! I had the white Pochette with the colorful monogram in the 2000's, as well as a denim Monogram Speedy, but that was really a trend at the time. It was the Noe bag that made me fall into Louis Vuitton again, getting a little obsessed with the bucket bag a few years ago, I saw it as a casual bag so the Monogram did not bother me that much. I hunted for it for a long time, but every single one was in a very damaged state (you can see some examples here), so I decided to forget about it cause, even if I found one in a decent state, I knew how it would end up looking.

Como yo soy de ideas fijas, y seguía con el runrún, le eché el ojo al modelo Alma, que es otro clásico que había visto mucho en tiendas vintage, y que parecía que se conservaba bastante mejor con el paso de los años. En cualquier caso seguía con muchas dudas porque no me veía yo paseando con todos esos logos colgando del brazo... pero al final encontré uno a buen precio y decidí darle una oportunidad.

But once I get an idea, I really can't forget about it, so my eye focused on the Alma bag, which is another classic piece that I had seen preloved many times and it holded up pretty nicely after using it. I still had my doubts cause I did not see myself walking with so many logos hanging from my arm... but eventually I found a good deal and decided to go for it.

Finalmente compré este bolso vintage en Junio de 2020, hace un año, por 317,09 $. Actualmente cuesta 1.660$ si lo compras en una tienda Louis Vuitton. Ya sabéis que siempre prefiero las piezas vintage, y sobre todo, creo que tiene mucho más sentido cuando se trata de clásicos como este bolso, pues además de conseguir un menor impacto medioambiental y un precio bastante mejor, el uso previo del bolso le da mucho más caracter a la piel, consiguiendo un aspecto más clásico todavía. 

I finally got this vintage bag in June 2020, a year ago, for $317.09. Today it retails for  $1,660 if you buy it at a Louis Vuitton boutique. You know I always prefer vintage pieces, especially if they are classic items like this bag cause, apart from having less environmental impact and a better price, the wear gives more character to the aged leather, giving an extra classic touch.

El bolso es el modelo Alma PM vintage, en canvas con estampado monogram marrón, y detalles en piel vachetta. Lo compré de segunda mano y estaba bastante usado, pero conservaba bastante bien la estructura. Le hice un lavado de cara importante, sobre todo limpiándo y reparando la delicada piel. Ya compartí el proceso pero, por si os lo perdísteis, podéis verlo aquí. También le añadí una correa larga nueva de piel vachetta, que sometí a un proceso de envejecimiento express para igualar el tono con el resto de el bolso. Y devolví el brillo a la cremallera y los herrajes, en otro capítulo que podéis recordar aquí!

The vintage bag model is Alma PM, in brown monogram coated canvas and vachetta leather details. I purcased it preloved and it had some wear, but the structure was well preserved. I did some intensive care, cleaning and repairing the delicate leather. I already shared the whole process, but in cas you missed it you can watch it here. I also added a crossbody leather strap that I aged to match the rest of the bag. And restored the color and shine of the hardware, in a different chapter that you can see here!

El caso es que, pese a mis dudas iniciales, este bolso ha sido un acierto! Lo utilizo prácticamente todas las semanas, me resulta bastante cómodo al tener un asa corta y una correa larga para llevarlo cruzado o colgado al hombro, y el tamaño es perfecto porque puedo llevar mi cámara y muchas otras cosas, y además no pesa nada! 

The point is, after all my doubts, the bag has proved to be a winner! I've been wearing it almost every week, it really is comfy cause it has the top handle and the cross-body strap, it has the perfect size to carry all my stuff, including my DSLR and it is very light!
