TWA Uniforms exhibition, TWA Hotel, New York

Buenos días! Hoy os traigo una de las exposiciones de moda más peculiares que he visitado; la colección de uniformes de piloto y, sobre todo, de azafatas de la aerolínea TWA, que cruzó los cielos desde 1930 a 2001. La exposición de uniformes, junto con muchas otras reliquias de la historia de la compañía, se encuentra en la que fue su terminal durante años, un alucinante edificio en pleno aeropuerto JFK de New York, diseñado por Eero Saarinen y que desde 2019 es un hotel donde el tiempo parece haberse congelado en los años 60.
Good morning! Today I am sharring one of the most unique fashion exhibitions I have ever visited; the TWA uniforms used by their crew from 1930 until 2001. The uniforms exhibition, with more memorabilia from the company's history, is located where once was their air center, an amazing building at New York's JFK airport, designed by Eero Saarinen, and transformed into a 60's style hotel since 2019.
Aunque casi toda la exposición la forman uniformes de las auxiliares de vuelo, también encontramos algún uniforme de piloto, incluído el de Lynn Ripplemeyer, la primera mujer que consiguió este puesto en 1978. Por lo visto se adelantó a los tiempos y aun no se habían diseñado uniformes de piloto para mujeres, así que tuvieron que vestirla con la talla más pequeña de hombre y ajustarla a su cuerpo con unos arreglos.
Most of the exhibition focuses on flight attendant uniforms, but we can also find some captain pieces, including Lynn Ripplemeyer's, the first women to become a TWA captain in 1978. They had not dressed any women for the role yet, so she wore a small size men suit that had to be customized for her.
El diseñador de Hollywood Howard Greer diseñó los uniformes de TWA desde 1944 hasta 1955. Los trajes eran bastante sencillos, pero incluían el logo a un lado de la chaqueta. Para que la tripulación pudiese hacer vida después del trabajo sin dañar la imagen de la empresa se inventaron una solapa móvil que ocultaba el logo cuando era necesario. Los trajes iban complementados por sombreros diseñados por Leci Original y según la época del año eran de diferentes tejidos.
Howard Greer, who was a Hollywood designer, designed TWA uniforms from 1944 to 1955. The suits were simple, and included the company logo cutout on one side of the jacket. In order to hide the logo while the crew was off work, the jacket had a mobile flap that covered it. Suits were made in different fabrics according to seasons and topped with hats designed by Leci Original.
Oleg Cassini, que era el diseñador de cabecera de Jackie Kennedy, fue fichado en 1955 y diseñó los uniformes que se utilizaron hasta 1960. Se realizaron en tonos tierra, a juego con la decoración interior de los aviones, y adornados por un sombrero diseñado por Mae Hanauer. El look se completaba con labios y uñas rojas, usando los mismos productos que Jackie.
Oleg Cassini, who was Jackie Kennedy official designer, joined the company in 1955 and designed the uniforms worn until 1960. Those were made in earthy tones, matching the planes interior, and paired with Mae Hanauer hats. The look was completed with the same red nail polish and lipstick worn by Jackie.
De 1960 a 1965 fue Don Loper quien diseñó los uniformes. Loper era diseñador en Hollywood y había diseñado los uniformes de la competencia, Pan Am, el año anterior. Estos diseños mantuvieron los tonos neutros, con lana marrón en invierno y khaki en verano, y se creó un delantal de plástico para el servicio a bordo.
From 1960 to 1965 Don Loper designed the uniforrms. Loper was a Hollywood designer that had created Pan Am's wardrobe the previous year. His designs kept the neutral shades, with brown wool in the Winter and khaki in the Summer, and added a plastic apron for on-board service.
Veinte años después de inaugurar sus vuelos transatlánticos, TWA decidió buscar un diseñador en París, alguien que le diese a la tripulación un toque femenino, inspirado en el estilo "jolie madame" que vestían celebrities como Audrey Hepburn o Brigitte Bardot. Pierre Balmain fue el elegido para los uniformes del 65 al 68, vistiendo a las azafatas con trajes en azul pastel y espuma de mar, colores que declaró que favorecían a todos los tonos de piel. Las camisas tenía cuellos de Peter Pan y en la cabeza llevaban una especie de boina que se acabó cambiando por un sobrero pillbox para intentar mantener controlados los voluminosos peinados de los 60. TWA regaló también frascos del perfume Jolie Madame de Balmain, con un mensaje que decía que las habían traido ellos mismos volando desde París.
Twenty years after their first transatlantic flight, TWA decided to find a designer in Paris, someone who gave a feminine touch to the crew, inspired by the "jolie madame" look worn by celebrities like Audrey Hepburn or Brigitte Bardot. Pierre Balmain was the designer chosen from 1965 to 1968, dressing the hostesses in baby blue and seafoam, colors supposed to look good on everyone's skin. The blouses had Peter Pan collars and the hats were some kind of beret that was changed for a pillbox hat to keep the 60's hairstyles in place. TWA gifted Jolie Madame perfume bottles by Balmain, saying they were flew by them directly from Paris.
Dalton of America fue quien diseñó los "no-uniformes" de la tripulación entre 1968 y 1971. Una serie de prendas en vistos verde jungla, rojo amapola y amarillo oro que combinaban entre sí de infinitas formas unidas todas por la bufanda y la boina de rayas de colores. El vestuario también incluía una capa roja acrílica con cremallera, y un chubasquero amarillo que se doblaba y guardaba en su propia bolsa. El toque sesentero final lo daba el calzado; a elegir entre tacones rojos o botas blancas por la rodilla!
Dalton of America designed the "un-unifoms" worn between 1968 and 1971. A capsule collection in jungle gree, poppy red and gold yellow that the crew could mix and match in endless ways, all connected by the striped beret and scarf. The wardrobe included a red acrylic cape with a zipper and a yellow raincoat that folded into its own pouch. The cherry on top was the footwear, red pumps or white knee-high boots!
Valentino Garavani fue el encargado de diseñar los uniformes de 1971 a 1974, aportando un toque chic italiano. Creó uniformes que se podían lavar a máquina y secar al aire, facilitando la vida de la tripulación, incluso diseñó vestidos camiseros de estilo safari que se podía llevar abiertos a modo de chaqueta y con pantalones debajo, muy a la moda en los 70. Los diseños en beige, azul marino, marrón y ciruela iban acompañados de pañuelos con la "V" que la tripulación anudaba a modo de cinturón, al pelo, en los bolsos... Valentino Garavani designed the uniforms from 1971 to 1974, adding an Italian chic touch. He created clothes that could be machine washed and drip dried, making things easier for the crew. He also designed safari shirt dresses that could be worn open over pants, very in vogue in the 70s. The beige, navy, brown and plum designs were decorated with V buttons and accessorized with matching scarves, that could be worn like a belt, on the hair, knotted to the bags... El americano Stan Herman diseñó los uniformes del 75 al 78. Fue el encargado de satisfacer las peticiones de la tripulación, que quería recuperar los colores vivos en su vestuario. Los uniformes en azul, rojo y amarillo también se adornaban con un pañuelo estampado con aviones que combinaba los 3 colores. Se mantuvo el estilo safari, acentuado por los gorros de las mujeres, y también se creó un uniforme masculino, puesto que los hombres se incorporaron a este puesto en los años 70.
Stan Herman was the American designer in charge of uniforms from 1975 to 1978. He took care of the crew wishes, who wanted bright colors back in their closets. The blue, red and yellow uniforms were also paired with a scarf printed in those 3 colors. The safari vibe continued and was enhanced by the hats. A men uniform was also desined, since men entered this career in the 70s.
En 1978 Stan Herman fue fichado por United Airlines para diseñar sus uniformes, así que recomendó a su amigo Ralph Lauren como sucesor. Ralph Lauren quiso devolver la uniformidad a los uniformes, después de unos años de mucha flexibilidad, y diseñó trajes con chaqueta doble botonadura en gris con unas rayas rojas en los puños. TWA prefería el azul al gris, así que los uniformes finalmente fueron azules y Ralph Lauren les cobró el doble. Aun así fue el responsable de los uniformes hasta 2001, año en que TWA desapareció.
In 1978 Stan Herman was hired by United Airlines to design their uniforms, so he recommended his friend Ralph Lauren to take over at TWA. Ralph wanted to recover uniformity after years of flexibility, so he created double breasted suits in grey with red stripes on the cuffs. TWA did not like grey uniforms, they asked for a blue color instead and Ralph Lauren charged them twice. They had to be quite happy with him, cause his designs were worn until 2001, when the company dissapeared.
